An Introduction to Female Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope this helps you move towards the next step in managing your pelvic health and your pelvic floor. I’m Alex, the Certified Pelvic Health Therapist at Physio HQ. You may be here in preparation for your new baby or after your baby has been born, if so, congratulations! You may also be here because you’re struggling with incontinence during sports, menopause, ageing or many other causes. What ever your situation we are here to help!

Your first appointment will be an hour long, so you will have plenty of time to talk about all your concerns, discuss your goals, and the strategies we’re going to use to get you there. You will put a brief explanation of your concerns on the consent form as well as a birthing history, if applicable, so I have an idea of your main concerns. Following this we will go to a private room and have an in depth discussion. I am fully aware that these are intimate questions, and you may feel vulnerable so you will always be able to pause or stop the conversation. We want you to feel safe so you are more than welcome to bring a support person with you who can be present for some parts or the entire session.

The gold standard assessment is an internal exam and is recommended, however some women choose not to do this during the first session, and some choose to never have one completed and this is entirely up to you. During the internal examination no external equipment, like a speculum, is used. It should be pain free and will be stopped if it becomes painful.

Following this you will be given an exercise programme and other strategies to start your rehab process. Appointments are typically every 2-4 weeks, and internal exams are not completed at every session. If you have any more questions or want more information, please contact me at alex@physiohq.co.nz. I look forward to helping you on the next part of your journey.
