Pelvic Health Physio in Older Adults

Did you know that 37% of women over the age of 55 and 15% of men over the age of 70 suffer with urinary incontinence (bladder leakage). Pelvic health physiotherapy is used to assess and treat your symptoms with exercise and lifestyle changes.

For women, we can help with bladder/bowel incontinence, urgency to use the toilet, difficulty fully emptying bladder or bowel, heaviness or dragging in your vagina, and sexual pain and/or dysfunction. Women with urinary incontinence who complete pelvic floor muscle training are 8 times more likely to report being cured than those who did no exercises.

For men, we can help with urine leaking, high frequency of urination, difficulty emptying bladder, pelvic pain, constipation, faecal incontinence, and erectile dysfunction. This can happen to all men with ageing but can also happen with prostate issues. The prostate can become problematic for many men. Following surgery, pelvic floor physio has been shown to significantly improve urinary incontinence, post-void dribble and erectile function.

Pelvic health therapy involves using exercise and other techniques to manage symptoms and allow you to continue your normal activities with reduced episodes of incontinence. We know coming to an appointment like this can be intimidating, we take these sessions at your pace, and you are always welcome to bring a support person.

Here at Physio HQ, Alex creates a safe space for you to talk about your pelvic health concerns in a non-judgemental, supportive environment, and will help give you the tools you need to manage your symptoms and return to your normal activities. Email her directly on alex@physiohq.co.nz, to ask any questions and find out if we can help you!
